Christchurch's Future
Have a look at our entries to the photographic competition here. For those that gave permission there was an individual entry, but we also tried to do a combined one. Not bad for a quick effort! The kids took most of the pictures themselves and told their models where to go. Don't the vision goggles look great!

Photographic Competition
Today we pretended to put on our future vision goggles to see into the future in our imaginations. We thought about our schools, parks, buildings, homes and the city centre and what we thought we wanted them to be. The children are going to make some vision goggles at home and their photo will include a picture of them in their goggles and a picture of their drawing of what they want in the future.
Please go to the site and click on entry, and view the 'Terms and conditions'. If you would like your child's entry to be entered by me before Monday at 5pm (!) please email me straight away. If you would like your child to enter from home with their own photo, please let me know too so we don't enter twice. You are more than welcome to get creative and head out with the camera on your own! There are great prizes to be had for individuals and schools.
End of Term Fun
End of Term Fun!
We are decorating a Christmas tree in class for the last
week and a half. Children need to bring
along an ornament to put on our tree.
They will take it home on the last day of school.
World Vision Smiles gifts for Christmas
World Vision have a campaign to help give to others in
poorer countries than NZ. I talked to
the kids about this and we decided it would be nice to give a couple of dollars
towards buying a gift from the World Vision pamphlet. They said it would be helpful and kind to do
this. This would only be $1 or $2 or
what you decide as a family to give.
What I’ll do is see how much we get, then round up the money myself and
order it online. Check out the link
below for more details. Please talk
with your child about this and if you are happy to participate please send the
money in an envelope and we’ll order it online together in class. https://www.worldvision.org.nz/Smiles/
Secret Santa
Children chose a secret santa name today. This is so they can buy a small gift $5 or
less for their secret santa, wrap it, and put it under our Christmas tree. On the last Thursday of term we will hand
them out and guess our secret santa. The
kids were excited about this one. The name of the secret santa is in their notebook on this notice!
Please see me if you have any
questions.

Team 4 Beach Outing Tuesday
The weather is looking a bit dicey for Tuesday so we are staying at school for it. We'll do some fun things here and have the bbq too. If you have offered to help out it would be lovely if you could still join us to help with cooking the bbq. Mrs Boustead is sending a note home today, so check your child's bag for details.

Mathletics Challenge!
I have given the class a challenge to see if they can do ten minutes of Mathletics each day at home, for a week! Starting today and finishing next Wednesday.
By the seashore
Wanted!
We are going to make photo frames. I'm looking for lovely people to collect a few shells and little bits of driftwood to glue to our frames. If you're a beach walker or like to meander along the beach with your kids, could you pick up a few shells for us?
Thanks!

RedcliffsOnline
The children have logged on to RedcliffsOnline and have uploaded a profile picture and changed their passwords. Please get them to sign in at home to keep them practising the skill of typing in their username. I've updated the Reading page with some things we have been doing this week, and there are some online links to activities to help learn about contractions. Check out the Heath & PE page and comment on our media gallery too. Just get your child to sign in to see it.

Ultranet
Redcliffs is implementing a Learning Management (LMS) to manage our online content and tools. It'll be introduced to most classes next year and the teachers will learn how to use it too. Later on next year, possibly in term 2, parents will be able to login and see what their children are doing.
A few class have been having a trial run of using their class space already. We've logged on for the first time today! The kids were amazing. You could ask your child to sign in here, and ask them to enter their username and password. It would be great to see if they can do it from home. I will transfer things from the blog to RedcliffsOnline bit by bit. At the moment the children know how to get to our class landing page from their dashboard, and also navigate through some of the reading and maths games.
Please be aware it is still very much under construction and our header is still to be uploaded (the pretty bit at the top). The things for parents have not be uploaded yet, so please still refer to the newsletter and normal website.

Essential Spelling Lists
According to the National Standards and Literacy Progressions that accompany the New Zealand Curriculum, by the end of their first year of school, students should be able to spell most of the high frequency words in lists 1 and 2. And by the end of their second year at school should be able to spell most of the words in list 1 and 2, and some of list 3 and 4.
I've included the lists here, as you might want to work on them at home and even over the holidays.
List 1

List 2

List 4

Calendar Art Update
Please read!
We have created another version of our calendar art! Below are the two versions. You might like to order one or the other. Version one is the children on the beach. Version two is the seagull on the post. Both are inspired by our artist Timo Rannali. Our latest attempt, with the seagull on the post, still needs some grass drawn on it. We'll complete this tomorrow.
Please make this clear on your form by writing your child's name and V1 or V2 next to their name. If you're not sure, just pop in Wednesday or Thursday to check. If you'd like to order both versions, please see me for another order form.

Timo Rannali Inspired Calendar Art
The children have worked hard on their beach scenes inspired by the art work of Timo Rannali. These pictures are done with water colours, and have a curved horizon and very stylised figures. I was very proud of the way the children worked with the paint, having a go at mixing the primary colours to make the colours they wanted.
Team 4's contribution to the "Fair" this year is the proceeds from our calendars and/or cards made with these pictures. You will receive an order form on Tuesday for these (sorry they were suppose to go out at the end of last week, but I was away sick). Unfortunately it is a quick turn around, being Show Day on Friday. So the orders for these are due on Thursday.
Please come and have a look at works in person if you like.

Aqua Gym Day One
Hi everyone. What a super class Room 17 is. They were amazing today with such a different timetable. First we had class photos, then Aqua Gym lessons, morning tea, reading and then straight out to a shorter lunch time and then finishing athletics. Phew! If your children are a little tired tonight it will be with good reason!
Check out these awesome swimmers! The children were AMAZING getting changed and were well behaved (like always!) on the bus. Thanks to the lovely parents who helped with changing after swimming.
We played 'Sleeping Bears' on the way back in the bus. Really useful for long trips if you want a tip!!

#1- A treasure hunt (minus the treasure!)
Today Room 17 went on a QR code treasure hunt, armed with my mobile phone and an iPodTouch.
The first clue was on the board. Once the children scanned it, they read the clue which told them where to go next. Here's a picture of us finding one of the clues outside of Mrs Boustead's office.

Which way should I go?
The Red17Climbers are the best at giving directions! I was so surprised at how well they did this activity.
In our strand maths (not adding and subtracting) we have been learning to listen to and give directions. Today we went out to an outside maze and directed out partners around only by using our voice. We learnt North, South, East and West from the compass and New Zealand map. We also learnt to include the number of steps our buddy needed to move.
