Tens Frames activities

It is very important for children to know the patterns to ten on a tens frame.  It helps with the imaging stage in adding and subtracting.  Use this maths site on tens frames to reinforce the quick recognition of the patterns.

Tricky Teen Numbers

The Red 17 Climbers have been working so hard at reading and saying the teen numbers correctly.  We have been making them with different materials.  Today the Yellow Squares group made them with tens frames.

We know that teen means ten.
We know that a teen number is made up of a ten and some ones.

Writing Recounts

Today we focused on planning our writing with a picture.  First we reminded ourselves of writing the 'when', 'who' and what of a recount in the first sentence.  Then we used time words to order what we did.

This is a recount about Ivor's morning before he came to school.  The pen's group in writing found out that almost all of them had kornies for breakfast!  To finish our recount we wrote a personal comment.  This could be what we thought, what we liked or how we felt.
Check out the recounts on the window about helping mum or dad, and at the back of the room about the Bug Man visit.

Scooters

The junior teachers have noticed that some preschoolers have been riding scooters up and down on the deck outside Rooms 15-17- before school ends and as students are leaving.  It is quite noisy for us in our classrooms and it is also dangerous.  We have a rule at Redcliffs that no scooters, bikes or skateboards are to be ridden in the school grounds.  This rule is for everyone.  Please remind your children to walk their scooters, bikes and skateboards in and out of the school grounds.  Thank you for helping make our school safer.

Before and After Numbers

Today in maths time we were focusing on before and after numbers up to ten, then to 20.

We had a flip strip and the children had to think of the numbers hidden under the strip.

Previous Maths learning

23/5 We were reading and saying the 'teen' numbers today.  We made them with popsicle sticks.  A bundle has ten sticks.  10 + 4 = 14.

16/5 Days of the week Try this link Roy the Zebra days of the week
9/5 This week we were careful to say the teen numbers correctly.  When counting stress the 'n' at the end as children get this confused with 'ty' numbers (60 not 16).4/5 We have been writing the numerals on our white boards
4/5 This week we did some more forwards counting.  Then we counted in tens to 100.  We figured out that we had 160 fingers in Room 17!

We were counting around in a circle today using our 100s board.

9/5 We practised making a number but starting from another number.  e.g. Make 8, but you've already got 3.
Term 1 We are learning to add two or more numbers together.  We made up stories about different objects and then recorded them with a number sentence.

2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8
2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8

This has been re- posted today as I am now putting everything in posts that can be linked back to on the blog pages (the tabs at the top).  This means it is easier to find information and you don't have to scroll down so far on a page.  If you click on a link it takes you straight to the post.

: Asking questions of a speaker.

Week 11 Term 1

Week 11 Term 1 continued...
This week we have started to do shared writing with a news story.  After the children have shared their news we choose one to write about.

These are two stories we wrote about different children's news items.
As we say each word we listen for the main sounds in each word.  We use the alphabet card to find the words we know or the letters that write those sounds.

We even used the word dictionary card to find the word 'said'.

News Week 4

Week 4
Focus: This week we started our new Buzz Groups for news/oral language.  The children did so well!  They greeted each other, asked questions, took turns and listened well.  At the end of our group time I quizzed them about other people's news before we wrote about James' news.

The Bug Man

On Tuesday 24th the Bug Man, John Marris, from Lincoln Entomology Museum visited us today.  He taught the children about bugs!

Koru and Kōwhaiwhai

We are learning about the school kōwhaiwhai pattern and what it means.

Kōwhaiwhai is painted repetitive pattern along the ridgepole of the wharenui.  The kōwhaiwhai links the pairs of ancestors across the roof.

Our aim is to understand the school kōwhaiwhai pattern and what it means.  Then we are going to create a pattern of koru to show our own families.

The pātiki pattern represents the flounder and is a symbol of welcome and hospitality.  It is significant to Redcliffs because the flounder represents the position of our school by the sea and our kapa haka group welcoming the community to our place of learning.

The koru shape is based on the curled-up young fern frond.  It represents birth and the unfolding of life.  It is significant because school is an important part of a child's journey into life.
