We are learning about the school kōwhaiwhai pattern and what it means.
Kōwhaiwhai is painted repetitive pattern along the ridgepole of the wharenui. The kōwhaiwhai links the pairs of ancestors across the roof.
Our aim is to understand the school kōwhaiwhai pattern and what it means. Then we are going to create a pattern of koru to show our own families.
The pātiki pattern represents the flounder and is a symbol of welcome and hospitality. It is significant to Redcliffs because the flounder represents the position of our school by the sea and our kapa haka group welcoming the community to our place of learning.
The koru shape is based on the curled-up young fern frond. It represents birth and the unfolding of life. It is significant because school is an important part of a child's journey into life.
